Pigtail braids are the trademark of a young tomboy. Think about it: Pippy Longstocking, Anne of Green Gables, Spinelli, even Arya Stark (before she cut off her hair). As a kid, it made total sense. It was an easy style that kept your hair off your face and out of your way while running with the boys.
As an adult, it’s a little harder to rock them, they don’t stand up in a meeting or date like they did on the playground. I used to wear them pretty often but I decided somewhere down the line that I was probably too old for them. Luckily they are having a moment. Sort of. Well, let me explain.
Earlier this season it seemed that everyone was getting corn-rows; Rita Ora, Cara Delevigne, Kristen Stewart to name a few. It even showed up on the catwalks of Kenzo, McQueen and Balmain. When you think about it, two french braids are kinda of like two giant corn rows…
Was that too much of a stretch? Regardless, I’ve decided to test my old braiding skills and give them a go again. Fuck it. If Alexa Chung can bring them back in her 30’s then I am in good company.
