I have a long and lasting obsession with mermaids. Growing up, I remember the mermaids in Peter Pan were my favourite part of the whole movie. They were so enchanting. I used to watch The Little Mermaid every chance I got. Also, Ariel was a bad ass compared to some other disney princesses; craved adventure of the unknown, repeatedly broke the rules and she saved her man. Forget falling asleep and waiting for some guy to wake you up, she took things into her own hands. So it was obviously more then her pretty red hair that made me love her.
In grade seven all I wanted was pink mermaid hair, but of course my very conservative parents denied me the joy of that. Flash forward to Wildfox’s lookbook circa 2012, Charlotte Free rocked bright pink mermaid hair in matching shades on the beach. Don’t forget Abbey Lee’s pastel pink hair. Then pastel hair (read *mermaid hair) started popping up everywhere. Kelly Osbourne, Katy Perry, Nicole Richie, and, unlike most things, I didn’t get sick of it. I just wanted it even more.
Well, I finally got it. And. I. Love. It. I wish I could tell 13 year old me that it all turns out ok. You can rock mermaid hair and still wear your Dad’s dress shirt.
