There is a line in Arabella, from the Arctic Monkey’s album AM, that made me consider changing my style. “That’s magic/ in a cheetah print coat” sung by Alex Turner’s sultry voice backed up by that baseline made me momentarily think abut throwing out my men’s dress shirts. If I couldn’t be the one he was singing about, I at least wanted to resemble her.
But, who am I kidding, right? That wasn’t going to happen anytime soon. Cheetah print? Fur? Not really my style…until now. When I saw this coat I knew I had to have it. It’s plush, warm and soft. The faux fur (BTW I’m vegan) feels like a teddy bear. And while most fur coats give off a distinct femme fatale vibe, I get total 60’s rocker from this one. I could picture Mick Jagger wrapped in this coat, wearing dark glasses while sleeping off a hangover in private plane next to Keith Richards. How could I not buy it?
So here are my tips for a rocker-off-duty fur coat. The first, try to find one that sits at the hips or a little bit longer. If it’s very long you risk looking like Cruella and if it’s too short it starts to look…well…fancy. We want to keep it casual, relaxed. Look out for weird cuts, such as ones that flare out like empire waist dresses. A medium brown or sandy colour is the better choice; but don’t go for all white or all black, they can can come across as too lavish and we want to look like we would fit in at a dive bar. Last but not least, to keep it more Jagger and less housewife keep the outfit underneath simple. I chose to wear a man’s black t-shirt, some high-waisted skinnies and casual boots. For makeup, I kept it mostly natural except for a cat eye-liner to play up the 60’s mood.
Ok, so maybe not exactly what Alex Turner was singing about, but it’s as close as I can get while still feeling like myself.
